Beets are one of the healthiest vegetables which is high in iron, vitamin A, vitamin C & fiber. Our Indian diet accommodates beets pretty well. If you are a beginner and trying to set up a vegetable garden of your own, beets should be your one of the first picks because these are easy to grow & maintain.

Beetroots are a cool season crop & can sustain cold & almost freezing environment which makes it easy to grow for people living in hilly & cold areas. Beets require at-least 4 hours of sunlight & better grows at the base of bigger plants.

The soil should be loose (Use a fork to sacken the soil) & drained soil which is medium rich.

You can grow beets in a pot or in the garden. In case you opt for a pot it should have minimum 12 inches of depth for the beets to grow freely. Before sowing the beetroot seeds keep them in water overnight & plant them keeping a distance of 10 cm from each other.

Harvest the beets after 2 to 3 months after sowing & make a great salad.  Have a pinky glow 🙂

2 Beans

Beans are easy to grow and hence the best for the first time vegetable gardener. Beans are also super healthy & delicious ( We Indians can vouch for  ‘Phali ki sabji’).

Following are the two varieties of beans which are easily available in India:

  1. Pole
  2. Bush

Variety selection depends on the decision whether you want to grow your beans vertically or as  bushes. Pole beans are extremely easy to grow but need support of mental/wood bars or trellis. Pole beans grow vertically & look pretty but also create a lot of shadow. On the other hand Bush beans are dense & packed close.

You can grow the beans in a pot or on a free garden soil. Keep the soil moist during the first 7 days so please water these newbies often during the intian days. Beans do not need plenty of fertilizer as these produce their own fertilizer on their own. Keep the beans in rows with a 36 inches gap between two rows.

3 Carrots

Q: How can you make a soup rich?

A: Add 14 carrots (carats) to it.

Funny but true 😀

Are you interested in growing carrots in containers? 5 Onions

Onions are an integral part of Indian food and used almost daily in our kitchens. It’s a great idea to grow your own onions (Specially looking at their high price :P).

Onions are a cool climate crop so it’s best to plant onions in the beginning of the winter season.

Green onions grow well in containers as compared to the bulb onion/common onion. For growing the bulb onions you require a pot which is 4- 5 inches deep which allows the onion to grow freely to a bulb size.

6 Tomatoes

It is your right to have juicy and fresh tomatoes; you can certainly grow them in pots. However, you must try first a dwarf variety like ‘Bush Big Boy’ in a 5-inch deep container. The popular dwarf varieties are;
