All about choosing the right Curtains for Homes in India.

Important things to consider when selecting curtains and why is it so important in design?

Every interior designer for home says the same thing –

“Curtains complete the room. Only condition you have to follow is to select your curtains  carefully.”

  • Heavy classic or dainty prints or sheer?
  • minimal texture or texture free fabric?
  • Dry clean only or washing machine friendly?
  • Vibrant colors or sheer?
  • Muslin, cotton, gauze, nylon, lace, voile or synthetic fabric?

Sure you are because the choices are endless of curtains, but don’t worry we being in the profession of ‘interiors for homes’ have got your back. Choosing the right curtain for your space can be a little tricky. Here are a few tips and tricks to ease up your work & decide on multiple factors.

  • Fabric and Colour-

Minimal modern bedroom interiors with white curtains

heavy dark curtains behind Huge custom platform bed

First, let’s talk about the type of look you want in your space, heavier fabrics go beautifully with traditional decor while minimalistic decor goes with fabrics like cotton and linen.

For example, if you see the  image 1, the bedroom follows a minimalistic scheme, which uses a white curtain fabric with thin blue stripes at the bottom. Now for the other image where we have a more luxurious & grand look, the velvet curtains are a stupendous choice.

You have plenty to choose from, sheers to lightweight cotton and medium weight brocade to heavyweight velvets. Another is the amount of sunlight you want to stream into your space, but that can be dealt with the curtain liners about which we will be talking later.

If you are a beginner in the world of curtains & home styling, the safest way is to go for colors as your wall shades or your furniture because then you don’t draw much attention to them and it becomes a fragment of your wall or furniture. Alternatively, if you want the drapes to be the focus opt for a small motif design or pattern to suit your design.

  • Curtain Length and Width-

“The more the better”, hanging curtains higher gives a sense of height to your space and creates a more royal look.

You can also add two or three inches more to the length, creating a puddle on the floor to enhance the dramatic look. (Why should palaces have all the fun wink). For a modern, crisp look, have the panel fall flush with the floor. Ideally, people like to hang it 6 inches above the window touching the floor.

  • Curtain liners-

Now let’s talk about curtain liners which are an essential part of your drapes, which if not selected accordingly can steal the desired look and feel from the room.

“A curtain liner is an extra layer of fabric added to the main fabric of the curtain to preserve the original color of the curtain.”

They act as insulation and keep homes warmer during the winter months, also make the curtains more durable and protect the outer fabric from sun damage. There are two types of Lined curtains; first, are lined curtains about which we have already covered in the previous discussion.

Second, are the Inter-Lined curtains which have an additional layer of blanket-like fabric sandwiched between the front face fabric and the lining. It makes the curtain look luxurious and drape elegantly.

Lined and interlined curtains absorb more sound, and provide greater insulation from cold and draughts, than curtains with just face fabric. Ever wondered what home interior designers do? They consider all these minute details while designing & make your home flawlessly gorgeous.

What to look for when buying curtain liners?

If looking liners for home curtains, go for lines made of 100% cotton, polyester or a combination of the two.

Apartment master bed room in cool tones & soothing ambiance

Curtain liners are supposed to repel water, resist stains and block the maximum amount of UV rays to enter the space.

Other factors to consider depending on where the curtains will be hung, as draperies in different rooms will have their own needs. While noise and light control might be your first priority in the bedrooms, you’ll need stain-resistant and easy-to-clean fabrics in the kitchen area, where spills and splatters are common.

Protection from ultraviolet lights will be important in rooms that receive full sunlight or for curtains that are made from light-sensitive materials.

  • Curtain Accessories-

“Accessories make everything better.”

Don’t want to experiment too much with the curtain color, fabric or texture? No worries. Go safe & use stylish Trims and accessories for curtains ex. tie backs, tassels, curtain knobs, hold back, curtain rods & many more. These accessories add magnificence & uniqueness to your curtains & to the overall space.

On the other hand, for a heavily decorated room or gaudy curtain fabric like velvet & satin use simple or no decorative accessories to keep it classy & sophisticated.

  • Pleat and Track-

When deciding on window coverings, curtain fabrics themselves aren’t the only thing you’ll need to figure out. Depending on the windows, drapery fabric, your personal style and how you want the curtains to hang, you also need to select curtain headings that tell how the curtains are pleated and sewn at the top and rodding you want.

  • Pinch pleat drapery– This one is an artistic pleating style. As the name suggests, curtain fabric folds  are pinched using pin hooks and attached together facing towards the room to create a stylish top section in the curtain.
  • Inverse or Reverse Pleat–  The pleat is not visible and hidden at the back.  If you like deep folds in the curtain you should go for this one but keep one thing in mind that this style suits long & full length curtains mostly.
  • Eyelet drapery– The eyelet heading style is gaining in popularity for its contemporary look and low maintenance operation. The eyelets (metal-edged holes) run along the top of the curtain. The even spacing of the eyelets allows the curtain to hand in very loose, soft folds, creating a wave-like effect. A great if you’re opting for a bold pattern as it won’t be greatly interrupted by pleats.

Well, these are just a few common pleat styles you can choose from, for a quick curtain makeover. Now let’s go over some of the rodding options we have. Decorative poles and rings or grommet curtains are good choices for some windows, but there are situations where only traverse curtain rods will do.

Traverse rods have clips or eyes that move along a track embedded in a slot in the rod. The eyes have a small opening for the curtain pins and they’ll run evenly across the rod, with the number of eyes dependent on how long the rod is.

A cord runs through the rod, too, and is attached to a master slide or pulley. The cord extends beyond the rod so that you can use it to open and close the curtains.

If going with traditional curtain rods go for slim rods, they look better than the fat ones. You can look for rods close to 1”, usually rods more than 1” diameter look cheap.

Now when you have decided on the curtain style, size, fabric, print & accessories the question is from where to buy the best quality curtains? Don’t worry again! We won’t leave you puzzled at all. You can buy curtains online in India from DDecor website.

If you are in Pune or want to buy curtains in Pune we recommend following furnishing stores. Here you’ll find a great collection, latest trends, quality material & are customer friendly.

We hope this article was helpful in selecting the right curtain for your home & wish your home a beautiful new vibe & a lot of positive compliments.

I am not talking about the rest of the design styles as it makes no sense to do those in today’s homes.

Watch closely at the above images. They are perfectly balanced, some wood, some colour, some texture kind of places. This is what you want.

Also understand what a cheap, ugly, and non-sense design looks like.

Why ugly? too much of wood, too much of cladding, cheap glossy laminate finish, and unplanned decorative items.

You don’t want to make it look like a wood house made of cheap dark laminate! In interior design, Taste matters. Taste of you and taste of your to be hired designers. That’s the key.

Do you like Contemporary? Hanh Insta fan? Or Eclectic?

Decide One.

Now, the Next step is to move from Emotions to calculations.

I will show you how to fix your budget.

Check your carpet area.

Now as a matter of fact, whoever you consult, get design built the following cost per square feet is the minimum cost you need to consider as budget.

If your budget comes to 1600/- Rupees per square feet. then you will get-

The main priority would be to get the essentials at the place. It would be comfortable, less costly, but less life of the furniture. finishes you will get- Laminate/ modular furniture, Fake wall finishes with an incomplete look. But anyhow, This will feel awesome.

If your budget comes to 1900/- Rupees per square feet. then you will get

Complete look, with decorative light fixtures, comfortable fabric sofas, Veneer finishes, decorative elements and heavy sun block lined curtains.

If your budget comes to 2700/- Rupees per square feet. then you will get

Brass, Genuine Leather sofas, Solid wood and Veneer finishes with PU coatings and decorative.

The more expensive the project is the far better options of finishes are.

Do not get confused with the designer if he says he can get the things done in less than the above mentioned cost.

It’s not possible! Either you are going to get duped or going to get a cheap- looking place.

So now as we know our budget.

We move to the person who can get the place completed in your required time.

Generally, a 1500 square feet house takes  3 months right from hiring to handover.

Checklist for hiring the right interior designer

Step 2: Where to find the guy-

Look for them on Google/social media, speak to your friends, a family who recently hired an interior designer or another key source is décor magazines and blogs that feature architecture and design works. Shortlist the ones that fit your list of filters. This way you would have a handful of them to approach.

 Facebook reviewsGoogle Reviews

Once you have shortlisted some designers, do a background check. Know about their education (specialization, institution), projects they have worked on, people they have worked with, people they have worked under if any, and their experience. Look for their reviews by their previous clients. Google & Facebook reviews are two of the best and non-modifiable sources to check their authenticity.

Through here you will be able to shortlist seven eight Interior designers max. which you like to consider based upon your style (looking at their past works/ images) and budget.

Step 3: Portfolio and Credentials

When you have an eye on the one, do a background check about their qualifications, company. previous projects. Take a look at their portfolio, go through the different range of design styles.

woman surfing the internet & social media on laptop

If everything in their portfolio has a similar design concept & feels almost the same Then you know that your home will also end up looking like a close copy. Always remember, a lot of companies show off with 3D images or software designed pictures rather than showing the actual work after execution. Always check their authenticity and work profile before proceeding.

This will help you to reach next four designers, which you may consider.

Step 4: Discuss

The discussion shouldn’t only be focused on the project budget but it should also reflect the design expert’s work style. Does he/she listen to your questions? Are they trying to persuade a bit too much?, Will he/she accomplish your goals within your budget? Can he/she adapt to your liking, schedule, and other requirements?

Please Keep everything transparent & communicate well. Designers or architects are like doctors, you lie, they might not be able to handle your condition, additionally, it may be a bigger mess than you have thought of. These guys are professionals in their field and want to make beautiful/ landmark projects for their clients. Hiding, budget, timeline or your taste from them could be a total disaster.

You may also ask the questions below for clarity from the designer:

– Is there a particular style that you like or that you don’t like?

– How many projects do you work on at a given time?

– What’s your internal structure, and who would I work with on your team other than you?

– How long would you anticipate the project to be completed?

– Does our availability line up?

– What is your project management style and what will you expect of me?

– How do you charge and what does your fee include?

– How do you keep track of my budget, payments, and refunds?

– How do you resolve problems during the project? (Furniture arrives damaged, the wrong piece was shipped, etc.)

For Example we (Ogling inches design architects) are a very adjustable and transparent design firm for the mentioned questions. In the beginning itself our clients always share all of their queries directly to us to let us help them if they get stuck somewhere & this makes the project journey comfortable for both the parties.

Happy client giving checklist to the professional

Now the time we were waiting for.

This discussion would tell you who is the guy who will help you get your dream place designed and executed in the best possible way and budget.

Step 5: Sign the contract

If you feel that the interior designer is listening closely to your ideas, is able to interpret your style, has a vibrant portfolio, has great reviews – High five! you’ve found a winner.

In India often we take things a bit casually & discuss some or all the conditions verbally which results into bitter experiences, arguments & confusion. Thus we recommend that before any work is done and before you pay anything, make sure you sign a contract.

It should specify responsibilities, a deadline, budgetary limits and all the other important aspects. Your home must reflect your personality and have unique touches. Clear all possible hidden terms, loopholes & possible troubling elements with the designer in advance.

Usually, interior designers charge their fees for the number of visits, out of your city visiting charges, printing site visits, communication fees, etc. Settle all of these amounts before signing the contract.

We wish you a smooth & satisfactory design process & great time after the project handover as well.

The best way for a better quality of sleep is to fill your home with beautiful indoor flowers and plants. Not only do they look great and bring vitality and life to your living spaces, but also they have fantastic relaxing and purifying benefits – which in turn can promote a healthy sleeping pattern.

A Recent study shows that plant makes living 17% more ornate, 17% more interesting, 17% more cheerful, 17% more attractive, 16% more welcoming, 15% more relaxing, 11% less stressful, 11% tidier, 8% quieter. These days, there are lots of options available to clean the air in your house, from humidifiers to air purifiers. But did you know that you can breathe fresh air by just adopting house plants?

Sadly As Indians we all are facing air pollution constantly & it has become an unavoidable  part of our lives, these air purifying plants can provide us much needed clean air at least at home & office :

 Snake Plant

Snake Plant in the dining room of one of our residential design projects

Snake plant emits oxygen at night time whilst simultaneously taking in carbon dioxide – something we naturally produce when breathing. All this leads to a purer quality of air and a better night’s sleep. The Snake Plant also filters some nasty but common household toxins from the air.
Snake plants drive away insects, snakes and these are one of the few plants that can endure extremely harsh conditions. They are easy to grow and need low light and a little water.

2 Rubber Plant

It is very interesting to know how baby rubber plant swallows unpleasant smell and harmful chemicals from surrounding air.

Living area ceiling painted in bright orange, white planter on white side table, marble white flooring, wall artistic circular mirror, wall art frame with a terrace view

While baby rubber plants are grown as easy-care houseplants, they also improve indoor air quality, according to studies conducted their large leaves can absorb airborne chemicals and break them down, rendering them harmless. With this, they absorb stinky or unpleasant odors also.

This one over the left is rubber plant in our one of the recent project.

3 Bamboo Palm

Green bamboo palm plant in white holderThis small plant is a fantastic air purifier. Ditch your chemical-laden air fresheners in favor of a few of these pretty palms and say goodbye to airborne smells and toxins. Closed kitchen redesigned and transformed into an open kitchen
Not only will you be able to enjoy your home’s pure, fresh air during the day, but you’ll enjoy a fantastic night’s sleep too.

4 Aloe Vera

One of the most common indoor plants, aloe-vera is very easy to grow, and takes very little effort to maintain. Just mild sunshine and moist soil are enough for this plant to thrive. Not only does it clear formaldehyde and benzene, but it’s also an excellent natural remedy for many hair and skin problems.

By keeping an aloe-vera plant at home, you get clean air, besides being able to use the plant extract on your skin and hair.

5 Areca palm

If you’re looking for a plant that will decorate as well as purify, choose areca palm. They grow to a height of 3 to 5 feet, need little watering, and sunlight through a window is usually enough.

Since these plants are big, you can keep them in a corner of any room, and watch the space immediately come alive.

They not only clear gases like xylene and toluene from the air, but also act as a natural humidifier.

6 ZZ plant

ZZ plant, with its wide, attractive, dark green leaves, boasts many favorable traits for offices and homes. ZZ plant tolerates neglect, is drought tolerant, and accepts low-light conditions without throwing a fit. Its waxy, smooth leaves reflect sunlight and brighten rooms. ZZ usually grows slowly to a height and width of two to three feet so it is not a plant monster that outgrows containers quickly.

(At the office even without natural lights its grown well in our one of the office project.)

7 Bamboo palm

This indoor plant is also known as reed palm, and grows well in shady places. It also produces small flowers and berries, and adds to the beauty of your interiors. Bamboo palm is best known for its air purifying qualities, and is particularly known to filter benzene and trichloroethylene. It can also be placed in areas that give out formaldehyde like kitchens, bathrooms, and around furniture.

8 Peace Lily

Keeping flowers at home brightens up any space. Peace Lily is one plant that can make any space look beautiful with its white flowers. It is also known to be one of the best plants to purify air for breathing. Peace lily is especially helpful in removing formaldehyde, benzene, and trichloroethylene. The flowers also look slightly different than usual – the upper part is somewhat like the hood of a snake. Overall, this is a great indoor plant for air purification.

9 English Ivy

English ivy indoor plant

If you have the problem of molds in your house, then English Ivy is the remedy. This evergreen climbing vine has the ability to reduce molds in your house, and minimize chances of airborne diseases. However, there is one big disadvantage for this plant–its leaves and berries that can be poisonous for animals and humans. If proper care is taken, there is no reason why English Ivy cannot be kept as a natural air purifier.

10 Chinese Evergreen

One of the easiest houseplants to have and maintain, Chinese evergreen is a tropical plant that thrives and blooms even in low light. It grows even where most other plants won’t grow. The plant filters out a lot of toxins and pollutants with more and more exposure to the air.

11 Weeping fig

weeping fig plant in a grey small planter

This can be a tricky plant to take care of, since it prefers bright but indirect light. But once that is managed, it is a really beneficial plant to have indoors. Weeping fig improves air quality by filtering out pollutants that come with furniture and upholstery. Weeping fig comes in different varieties with differing leaf colours. The all-green type,   F. benjamina, is the most common variety, but there are other varieties as well, though they may only be available with few plant nurseries.

12 Warneck Dracaena

Warneck Dracaena plant

Commonly known as Warneckii, this plant has the potential to grow up to a height of 12 feet. This dracaena is striking with its striped leaves forming clusters, and can be used to beautify any living space. In addition, Warneckii is a natural air purifier, helping to filter out pollutants that come from varnishes and oils. Even with minimal water and sunlight, this plant grows well indoors, and provides several benefits.

Follow these tips to maintain your indoor plants like an expert gardener:

  • Never allow an indoor plant to sit in water, always drain the excess away immediately after watering.
  • Fertilizer Most houseplants benefit from a dose of fertilizer, but only during the growing season. Liquid or powder fertilizers made specifically for houseplants are the best choice.NPK chemical fertilizer of a spoon monthly will help boost plant growth.
  • Top view photography of a cafe designed with a forest theme
  • Notice where you are placing the plants and not just anywhere. Spots that are near heat or air conditioning ducts, or near TV or between curtains are not good for the plants. So avoid these places.
  • Make sure the plant is getting sufficient light as per its need. The best way is to choose houseplants that will thrive on the amount of light that your house can provide.
  • Healthy plants are better able to ward off pests and disease much than the weak plants. You can follow simple Vaastu tips. Those plants that need full sun you can keep near a south facing window.
  • For partial shade plants, use East or West facing windows, these get moderate sunlight. However, windows that face north gets very little sun. However, windows that face north gets very little sun.You can also mist the plant with a spray bottle.
  • Dust on houseplants not only looks untidy but it is also bad for your plant. Dust clogs the pores of plant leaves, making it difficult for the plant to breathe. It also decreases the amount of light getting absorbed hence the photosynthesis of the plant also goes down. Dust and dirt will also attract pests, mites, and insects. You can wipe large-leaved houseplants with a wet and soft cloth with some light soap, or you can use neem spray. For plants which have small leaves, use a hand sprayer to drench them with water.
