A Nursery School, South Senegal
KAIRA LORO ARCHITECTURE COMPETITION 2025

In the heart of South Senegal, where stories travel on the wind and memory lives in the soil, this nursery is imagined not as a building, but as a living, breathing space that belongs to its people.
Here, architecture is not about walls and roofs, but about relationships between child and elder, nature and culture, freedom and care. The design celebrates life’s earliest connections: learning that begins in light, sound, touch, and love.

Freedom is its foundation—the freedom to play, speak, worship, and dream. In response to colonial disruption, it reclaims every child’s right to grow within their own land, language, and tradition. Education here is not imposed but nurtured, like songs passed down through generations.
Inspired by the Village Circle
The layout mirrors a village circle, with modular units arranged like elders beneath a baobab, open to the sky and shading one another.
Verandas curve gently around play areas, and courtyards invite storytelling. Paths meander, guiding rather than controlling. This form embodies Ubuntu, the idea that “I am because we are,” turning the school into a self-sustaining community.

Built from the Land
Walls are crafted from rammed earth, shaped by hand and warm with the land’s resilience. Tire swings hang from arched walls, transforming everyday objects into memories.
Nature flows through classrooms. Trees rustle nearby, skylights open to the sky, and water features shimmer with sunlight. Hand-painted walls feature traditional Senegalese patterns, enveloping children in heritage and story.

Spaces of Healing and Connection
Dining and infirmary spaces feature recycled beer bottle walls that filter light into vibrant mosaics.
Above them, a colorful fabric roof mimics African textiles, cooling, shading, and recalling ancestral journeys. These are more than functional spaces; they are centers of healing, dignity, and connection.

Celebrating Vernacular Wisdom
The office uses vernacular cooling. Hollow extruded cylinders ventilate naturally, celebrating ancestral architectural intelligence.
Around the water body, calabashes are embedded in walls, echoing culture and nourishment. In the courtyard, a wind direction pole turns gently, reminding children that learning is not linear but a dance with nature—fluid, responsive, and alive.
Designed for Everyone
Every element is inclusive. Sloped verandas ensure accessibility, and barrier-free pathways turn movement into gestures of welcome.
Sustainability is more than a feature; it is a mindset. Traditional crafts are practiced, not preserved, and local artisans shaped not just the structures, but the spirit of the school.
A Sanctuary of Belonging
Ubuntu flows through every shaded roof and sunlit path. This is not just a school; it is a sanctuary of culture, belonging, and possibility.
The Ubuntu Cradle is a home where children grow in freedom, held by the warmth of tradition and the boundless sky of their own potential.
